How to tell the quality of latex paint, so you can decorate your home without worry.
Water pollution from home renovation has become a growing concern, and low-quality paints and coatings are among the primary sources of such pollution. So how can we prevent and reduce water pollution in residential renovations? High-quality latex paint is essential; yet in today’s mixed and often confusing latex-paint market, how can consumers tell good from bad—and what criteria should they use to select reputable, high-quality products?

How to Tell Real from Fake Latex Paint
1) Look: genuine latex paint, when first opened, has a remarkably smooth and glossy appearance, with a thin film of oil-like substance floating on the surface—this is the emulsifying agent. In contrast, counterfeit or low-quality paint typically reveals only a thin layer of water on the surface upon opening, and may even show a bluish tinge within the paint itself.
2) Smell: Genuine latex paint of generally poor quality has a very faint odor, often resembling earthy soil. In contrast, fake or low-quality latex paint emits a strong, pungent smell. However, if the latex paint is completely odorless, that too should raise red flags, as it may be counterfeit.
3) Applying and brushing: After opening the latex paint, dip a brush into a small amount and apply it to the panel. If the application is exceptionally smooth and even, with strong coverage, and the dried film does not feel overly hard, then the paint can be considered a genuine, high-quality product. On the other hand, if the application feels rough and grainy, it indicates that the latex paint is counterfeit or of poor quality.

How to tell good latex paint from bad
1. Leveling property of latex paint. Stir the latex paint thoroughly with a small stick or spoon to ensure uniform distribution, then allow it to flow down from a low point. If the paint flows in streaks, this indicates poor quality; if it flows in clumps, the quality is even worse. Alternatively, dilute the latex paint with water according to a specified ratio, apply it to a panel, and allow it to dry completely. The flatter the surface of the dried paint film, the poorer the leveling property and the lower the overall quality.
2. Coverage of latex paint: Apply the latex paint to a sheet of old newspaper, allow it to dry, and then examine the degree of blurriness of the printed text on the newspaper. The more blurred the text, the stronger the paint’s coverage. Note that when applying the paint to the newspaper, it should be spread evenly and in a thin layer.
3. To assess the PVC level of latex paint, apply a thin coat of the paint onto a sheet of newspaper and allow it to dry. Once the paint has dried, fold the newspaper repeatedly until cracks begin to appear on the painted surface, then stop and measure the angle of the fold. The smaller the angle, the lower the PVC content of the paint, and the poorer its mechanical properties. Alternatively, apply the paint to a glass surface, let it dry, and then use a hard object to scratch through the paint film. If the resulting crack produces a powdery residue, this indicates that the paint has a high PVC content.
